Despite the Mustangs' struggle at the free throw line (16-29; 55.2%), WNMU edged past the Metro State College Roadrunners on Thursday night, 58-54. The Mustangs improve to 8-6 overall and 4-2 in the RMAC. The Roadrunners are now 9-8 overall and 2-4 in conference play.
In the first half, it was a see-saw battle with a lot of shooting. Metro State went 8-of-25 from the floor; whereas the Mustangs hit 10-of-25 shots. WNMU walked into the locker room up by three, 23-20.
The Mustangs took a six-point lead with 18:06 left after senior Kris Taylor (Mesa, AZ/Dobson High School) (Mesa, AZ) nailed a three-pointer. Taylor finished the night with 13 points.
WNMU took another six-point lead at the 12:47 mark, but the Roadrunners came back on a 10-2 run that lasted five minutes to put the visitors ahead, 39-37. The lead wouldn't last long, though, thanks a few key plays by Kris Taylor (Mesa, AZ/Dobson High School), which included two jumpers, a free throw, and one offensive rebound.
The Roadrunners, down by seven with a minute remaining in the game, did not go down without a fight. Guiseppe Biancio nailed a three with :44 remaining to put Metro State within four points. The Roadrunners were then put in a "must foul" position. The Mustangs missed the next 4-of-8 attempts at the charity stripe, but it was still enough to seal a victory, 58-54.
The Mustangs had to battle inside all night as Metro State scored 34 points in the paint, but WNMU was able to capitalize on Metro State's 18 turnovers and turn them into 26 points.
Devin Stewart (Tucson, AZ/Santa Rita High School) (Tucson, AZ) finished with 13 points, hitting seven from the free throw line. Senior Casey Crevelone (Tucson, AZ/CDO High School) (Tucson, AZ) also scored double-digits with 11.
Metro State's Lawrence Billings posted the lone double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds in his 26 minutes of play.
